Marshes with wooden pathways – floating bird watching stations – Fishermen’s villages with quiet beaches – Soviet architecture
Kemeri national park – a natural wonder popular with thousands of migratory birds, as well as tourists, that have been coming here for more than 200 years to improve health in the resorts that provide therapeutic sulphur and mud baths. While the previous glory of the resort has been lost and one can only stand in the shadows of the buildings that were once healing thousands, it is becoming a populartourist place once again for those seeking unparalleled natural beauty.
We start by exploring the remains of what once was a popular resort town with remains from the architecture of the first republic of Latvia as well as scary Soviet concrete monsters.
We’ll watch birds from a floating tower on one of the lakes and witness how the healing sulfuric water surfaces somewhere in the marshlands. This water and therapeutic mud made Ķemeri a popular destination for medical tourism already in the 18th century.
Then we’ll head towards Kurzeme coast for a refreshing sea breeze in the streets of small fishermen’s villages and a walk on pure sandy beaches.
After a lunchbreak with local smoked fish we’ll return to Ķemeri and leave our bikes behind and go for a walk on a plank-way through the marshlands to get to know more about the unique flora and fauna.
